Take the Ferry Between NYC and the Jersey Shore

POSTED BY
Evelyn Kanter

Take the ferry to the beach, from Manhattan to Sandy Hook on the Jersey Shore, part of the Gateway National Recreation Area, administered by the National Park Service.

Seastreak is a modern high-speed ferry that travels between East 35th St. and from Wall St. to Sandy Hook in about 35 minutes.

There are two Seastreak departures each weekend day, and one a day Monday to Friday.

On weekends, ferries depart 35th St. at 8am and 10:30am and Wall St. at 11am.

Ferries depart Sandy Hook for Manhattan at 3:45pm and 5:45pm on weekends and at 4pm during the week.

2021 fares are $47 round-trip, and $25 for children 12 and under (that is a price change from 2020 from $50 for adults and $10 for children)

Also different in 2021 - Seastreak dropped the $10 fee for bikes last year.  It’s back 2021, but it’s  $5 per bike, not the previous $10.

Also new is a $5 service fee to change your reservation.

There are also bicycles available for rent through Ray’s Bike Rentals (https://raysbikerentals.com/index.html)

Seastreak Rules for 2021

Due to ongoing social distancing requirements, there is no shuttle bus service between the ferry dock and the beaches again this season.

You will have to walk or ride a bicycle between the ferry landing and the beach.

There will be a shuttle available for disabled customers only (and one traveling companion). To maintain proper social distancing, that shuttle will only be able to take one party at a time.

Face coverings must be worn at all times by all passengers inside terminals, during the boarding process in Manhattan and at Sandy Hook, while inside the main cabins of our vessels, and during the disembarkation process.

Passengers are required to keep their groups socially distanced from other groups when queuing in NYC, while onboard the vessel, and when returning to the ferry landing at Sandy Hook Beach.

Please note that Sandy Hook prohibits bringing alcoholic beverages onto park grounds.

Sandy Hook Beach ferry departures must be reserved in advance, and are only available as part of a round-trip originating in Manhattan.

There are also bicycles available for rent through Ray’s Bike Rentals (https://raysbikerentals.com/index.html)

Where to Go at Sandy Hook

To help plan your trip, click here for a National Park Service map of Sandy Hook.

There’s a seven-mile bike path which includes historic Fort Hancock.

Sandy Hook beaches have lifeguards.

North Beach is the most popular, for its picture postcard view of the Lower Manhattan skyline.

Beach E is great for families because it has restrooms and restaurants.

Gunnison Beach is clothing optional.

Sandy Hook is part of the Gateway National Recreation Area and there are Park Rangers on duty.
