One of the best ways to protect yourself against identity theft is to shred financial documents. It’s also a good way to declutter those piles of documents left over from filing your taxes.
NYC Shred Days 2020 is actually two days - Saturday, Nov. 7 and the following Saturday, Nov. 14.

Up to three boxes or bags of papers per person will be accepted, although the rules do not say how large or small those boxes or bags can be, only that there are no more than three.
Just think how much paper you can fit into one single paper grocery store shopping bag - and then you can shred that, too, and go home empty-handed.

Why you should shred your old documents
Every two seconds someone’s identity is stolen, and 16.7 million Americans were victimized by identity fraud last year.
Overall fraud incidence climbed eight percent.
A whopping 90 percent of Generation Xers and Baby Boomers in New York called the prevalence of fraud, including identity theft, a “significant problem” for New Yorkers – with 63 percent saying it’s a “very significant problem,” according to a recent AARP NY/Siena College survey.
Shredding your documents is one way to safeguard your personal information before it goes into the trash.
The free shredding event is sponsored by NYC Council Speaker Corey Johnson, who held a similar event in 2019 .
