NYC Free: IDNYC Expands Programs

POSTED BY
Evelyn Kanter

IDNYC benefits
Just in time for the new school year, NYC kids as young as 10 now can get the FREE IDNYC cards allowing them free admission to museums, zoos, discounts on movies and bike rentals and more benefits.

The IDNYC program had been open only to children as young as 14 years old.  Lowering the age limit could add 300,000 NYC kids to the IDNYC rolls.

Roughly 1.2 million New Yorkers already have the cards, which are available only to NYC residents (sorry visitors), regardless of their immigration status.

The IDNYC card offers multiple benefits including FREE admission to museums, zoos and botanical gardens,  discounts on shopping and entertainment, and can be used as a library card for the NYPL, Brooklyn and Queens library systems.

The IDNYC card can be easily integrated with your account at any of the three NYC library systems, the New York, Brooklyn, and Queens Public Library Systems, and it is the only card that is accepted across all three NYC public library systems.

To use your IDNYC card at a library, simply ask a librarian or a library clerk at your local branch to connect your IDNYC card with your current library account. If you are opening a new account, you can sign up and use your IDNYC card as your library card.

The program has expanded every year since it was introduced in 2016  with new participants and benefits, to help you enjoy NYC on the cheap.

Here’s how to apply including the documents needed to prove identity and residency.

Search by borough to find more than two dozen places where you can apply.

Participating museums and movie theaters  include  the Museum of Arts and Design, Film Forum, the Museum at Eldridge Street and the American Museum of Natural History.

Bike New York, a nonprofit organization that promotes and encourages bicycling and bicycle safety through education, community outreach and events, is the organizer of the TD Five Boro Bike Tour (the largest bike ride in the U.S.), Bike Expo New York, and smaller regional and community rides.  IDNYC Cardholders  get 50% off a new one-year membership.

  • Citi Bike has been a participant for some time. Save 15% on your annual Citi Bike membership during your first year as a new Citi Bike member. Click here to sign up with your IDNYC card.

New Victory Theater in Times Square is New York City’s top performing arts nonprofit entirely devoted to kids and families, with theater, dance, circus, opera and music from around the world at affordable prices. See their performance schedule here.  IDNYC Cardholders get a 20% discount on tickets for evening (5 pm and 7 pm) performances. To take advantage of the discount, enter your IDNYC card number at NewVictory.org/IDNYC when buying tickets online, or by showing the IDNYC card when purchasing tickets at the box office.
