The long-awaited SeaGlass Carousel opens in Battery Park Thursday, Aug. 20, and it’s unlike any other carousel anywhere. Designed like an underwater garden, riders literally float along inside colorful fish that sparkle and shimmer.
The SeaGlass Carousel is housed inside a glass building that resembles a seashell, enhancing the underwater-like experience. It’s sure to become a favorite with kids of all ages, New York City residents and visitors alike.
The 30 fiberglass carousel fish are all named after real ones, including angelfish, butterflyfish, Siamese fighting fish, yellow lionfish, and triggerfish. They rotate and yaw, like traditional carousels. But there’s no caliope music here.
These fish glide along to classical music, adding to the dreamlike quality of the ride, including adaptations of Mozart’s 40th Symphony and Prokofiev’s “Dance of the Knights” from Romeo and Juliette.
The New York Times describes it as being inside a school of whirling fish.
Each five minute ride will cost $5. On opening day, the SeaGlass Carousel is operating 1pm to midnight, and from then on it will run 10am to 10pm daily.
The SeaGlass Carousel is in the part of Battery Park known as the Bourse, alongside Castle Clinton.
