About the Paley Center for Media and CBS Founder William S. Paley
Originally called the Museum of Broadcasting, it was founded by William S. Paley, also the founder of CBS, and the NYC location is just up the block from the former CBS Headquarters, in what we used to call “Black Rock”, the Eero Saarinen building at 6th Ave. and 52nd St.
There’s also another location in Los Angeles.
I say “we” because NYC on the Cheap publisher and editor Evelyn Kanter worked for CBS, both in Black Rock and in the Broadcast Center on West 57th St., as a producer, editor and on-the-air reporter for both CBS News and WCBS Newsradio 88.
I was lucky enough to have met Mr. Paley several times, when he popped into the newsroom to say hello, usually during news emergencies to give us a nod of approval, and at holiday parties, when he made an appearance with his wife, “Babe” Cushing Paley.
Those were the days, my friends.
NYCOTC Publisher/Executive Editor Evelyn Kanter is a native New Yorker who has written for the NY Times, NY Daily News, NY Post, New York Magazine, and a former producer for CBS News and ABC News and on-air reporter for WCBS Newsradio 88 and WABC-TV Eyewitness News.
Evelyn Kanter also is the author of several NYC and Hudson Valley guidebooks, including my latest, 100 Things to Do in NYC Before You Die.
