NYC Holiday Events: AMNH Origami Holiday Tree

POSTED BY
Evelyn Kanter

New York City holiday treesIt’s an annual tradition at the American Museum of Natural History. The always delightful Origami Holiday Tree always opens to the public the day before Thanksgiving, and remains through the holiday season.

The 2021 tree is the museum’s 50th anniversary Origami Holiday Tree.

The theme of this year’s 13-foot tree is Gems of the Museum, featuring 50 specially created models in recognition of the “golden anniversary” 50th Origami Tree and this Museum tradition, which started in the 1970s.

Among the more than 1,000 origami pieces decorating the tree will be models of dazzling specimens from the new Allison and Roberto Mignone Halls of Gems and Minerals, “jaw-some” pieces inspired by the new special exhibition Sharks, and others those depicting iconic Museum exhibits like the Blue Whale, Titanosaur, and Tyrannosaurus rex.

If anybody reading this doesn’t like dinosaurs, sharks or precious jewels, there’s no reason to read further.

The AMNH Orgami Holiday tree is produced in partnership with OrigamiUSA, the Origami Tree is delightfully decorated with hand-folded paper models created by local, national, and international origami artists.

Throughout the season, AMNH offers virtual origami folding tutorials, with Talo Kawasaki, one the Museum’s Origami Holiday Tree designers.

Attendance in the museum continues to be limited to less than normal pre-Pandemic capacity to allow ample room for physical distancing.

Advance ticket reservations are required and are available now on amnh.org or through the Museum’s Explorer app.
