Take the NYC subway to Japan to enjoy all things Japanese in Grand Central Terminal, including FREE tastings, cultural performances and more. The sixth annual Japan Week event at GCT is through Friday, with FREE exhibits and tastings, demonstrations of traditional folk art and more, in Vanderbilt Hall.
The centerpiece of the 2017 tourism festival is a traditional Japanese Zen garden where we busy New Yorkers can stop by to find a peaceful moment, along with sampling modern Japanese culture. The garden, complete with boulders, white gravels, moss and trees, is designed by famous Japanese landscape designers to be reminiscent of the Zen Garden from the Ryoan-ji Temple in Kyoto.
Through the garden, the designers aim to tell the story of Oyashima, a Japanese origin story about ‘8 big islands’to engage the public. The designers are creating stone waves in the garden twice a day, which visitors are invited to watch.
Visitors to Japan Week also will learn the story of Chiune Sugihara, Japan’s Oskar Schindler, and Japan’s high-tech products. .
As always, Japan Week at GCT are showcasing both the traditional and modernsides of Japan by promoting a range of Japanese products and services, including the arts, crafts, food, and technology of Japanese culture. And tourism, of course, with experts on hand to answer questions about visiting Japan.
