National Tequila Day: Where to Celebrate in NYC

POSTED BY
Evelyn Kanter

best nyc happy hoursNational Tequila Day is Saturday, July 24th.  Make reservations now to celebrate at one of these popular neighborhood Mexican restaurants, taquerias and cantinas in NYC.

All offer great Margaritas year-round in your choice of frozen or on the rocks, with or without a salted rim, flavored or not.

These family-owned and locally-owned restaurants offer special Margarita happy hour deals during the week, too, along with bar bites specials.

Our list of Margarita happy hour deals includes only those destinations which publish prices on their websites, so you know the price before you go, and can budget your happy hour on the cheap.

Reservations are recommended for National Tequila Day in July, National Margarita Day in February, and Cinco de Mayo in May.

All the NYC restaurants listed have re-opened for dine-in, in accordance with NYC regulations, and several also have expansive sidewalk seating.  Take-out and delivery also are available.

Havana Central

This restaurant specializes in traditional Cuban cooking and Cuban-style drinks, including hand-made mojiotos, which are rum-based, not tequila-based.

Happy Hour is Monday-Friday, 4pm to 7pm, with drink and bar food deals.

Menu choices are the Classic Cuban Sandwich, a grilled ham and cheese marvel, for $13.95.  And no Cuban meal is complete without a flan for dessert.

  • Three locations - 151 W. 46th St. in the Theater District, Roosevelt Field, and Menlo Park, NJ.
  • Check the website for varying hours and menus.

Cantina Taqueria & Tequila Bar

Margaritas are $7 during weekday Happy Hours, 3pm to 7pm, including strawberry and mango and less common passion fruit and cucumber.

There also are taco specials ranging from $2.95 to $3.75, and $4 on Taco Tuesdays, including fish, brisket and shrimp tacos.

Cantina also known for serving tortillas made fresh daily, at Tortilleria Nixtamal in Queens, which uses only organic, non-GMO corn, planted and harvested by environmentally-conscious farmers in Illinois, delivered fresh to NYC each week.

  • Two locations, 1838 Seventh Ave. at 111th St., and 329 Lenox Ave. at 126th St., both Harlem.

Or, opt for the Margarita Madness at one of these these larger Mexican food and drink outposts, including national chains.

Dos Caminos

Margaritas are $12 to $15, unless you go for $45 Millionaire, with super-pricey Don Julio 1942 tequila. Unfortunately, the prickly pear Margarita is available only in frozen style.

This mini-chain also has great guacamole, served in the traditional volcanic stone bowl, to accompany your Margs.

  • Dos Caminos has four locations, Meapo, Soho, Park Avenue South and Times Square.

Mad Dog & Beans Cantina

Go for the FREE Tequila Tastings on Wednesdays, to decide which one you want for your Margarita.

Go with a group of friends and drink yourself silly with the Margarita Tower, approximately three liters of liquid, for $110.  It’s made with fresh-squeezed citrus fruits and tequila, of course, and you can customize the cocktails with one of nine flavors for an additional $10 each.

It can get rowdy when there’s a Tower party in the house.

  • Two locations, 5 East 38th, MIdtown, and 83 Pearl St. in the Financial District.

More Restaurants to Try

There are dozens of other great Mexican restaurants, taquerias and cantinas in NYC, and most - if not all - have happy hours.

And many offer Cinco de Mayo, National Tequila Day and National Margarita Day deals.

As we said earlier, our list includes only those which post their prices on their websites, so you know before you go how much to budget for your happy hour on the cheap.

If we missed any of your favorite spots for a great Margarita, let us know and we’ll add it.

 Uncle Julio’s

This Dallas-based chain is offering a 16-ounce Frozen or Swirl Margarita to go for only $5 at participating locations on National Tequila Day, for to-go orders placed online  with a food purchase.

They are served well-frozen in convenient soft pouches. Take them home and let the margaritas sit at room temperature for 15 to 30 minutes until they achieve that perfect slushy consistency, pour into glasses, and enjoy. Uncle Julio’s invented the Swirl Margarita in the 1980s, made with layers of frozen margarita and homemade sangria.

Uncle Julio’s also offers a Margarita of the Month, which changes monthly.  July’s Fresh Margarita of the Month is the Peach Margarita, made with freshly squeezed lime juice, muddled peaches  100% agave Lunazul Tequila and St. Germain 12. for that unmistakably fresh taste. Add a Premium Tequila Floater* (*where available by law) to a margarita for $2.

Chili’s:

Get $5 margaritas during the month of July, including a Presidente Marg .

Actually, Chili’s is making $5 margaritas a regular menu item, with a different flavor each month.

Margarita Poppularity

It’s become one of the favorite cocktails.  Here are the stats.

These prices and menus are up-to-date as of July  2021
