National retail chains require you to sign up for their birthday club or for their customer loyalty program, but that’s free, too, and you often get additional coupons and deals throughout the year for signing up.

Some stores don’t put the birthday freebie deal on their websites, so be sure to ask when you shop on your birthday, and be sure to have your driver’s license or other i.d. with you, just in case you are asked for proof of your birth date.

Most birthday freebies are only for members of the retailer’s loyalty program, so if you aren’t already a member of your favorite stores’ programs, now is the time to sign up.

Read the birthday discount coupon or certificate carefully, since many expire within 30 or 60 days of your birthday, or are valid only during your birthday month.
