NYC on the Cheap
is your guide to getting
more New York City for less money.
NYCOTC is your one-stop resource for everything that’s great, wonderful and exciting about the greatest, most wonderful, most exciting city on the planet.
We’re here to help you take an inexpensive bite out of New York City restaurants, theater, museums, shopping, events and more.
NYC on the Cheap publisher and chief guide is Evelyn Kanter, a native and lifelong New Yorker and award-winning journalist, author, photographer and broadcaster.
I’ve been writing about my hometown forever, and traveling the world to remind myself that there’s no place like home.
As a longtime smart spending and frugal living enthusiast, I track down and gather up the best free and cheap activities and events, daily deals, discount dining and discount tickets to theater, concerts and other events and attractions, so you can enjoy NYC more and spend less doing it.
My not-so-secret resume includes a decade as consumer reporter on WABC-TV “Eyewitness News” and on ABC News network affiliate stations nationwide, and before that on WCBS Radio “Newsradio 88” and the on CBS Radio Network, reporting daily on frauds, rip-offs, dangerous products and best buys.
For those of you who have been in NYC for longer than a New York minute, that means I worked alongside local legends including Roger Grimsby, Bill Beutel, Rosanne Scamardella and Warner Wolf.
If there’s any doubt, watch this brief clip of a Channel 7 newscast sign-off, for a glimpse of me on the left, with fellow reporter Gloria Rojas, in the last seconds.
News nuts everywhere also will appreciate that I also worked with such broadcast news legends as Peter Jennings, Walter Cronkite, Charles Osgood and Ed Bradley.
Oh, the stories I could tell about any one of them. But not here.
I’m also the writer or editor of a bookshelf full of New York City and New York State guidebooks and the NYC on the Cheap smartphone app, and I have written about New York City and other destinations for publications including Delta Sky, United Hemispheres, American Way, Orbitz, Travelocity, AAA World, US News and World Report and USA Today.
Over the years I’ve also written for the New York Times, New York Post, New York Daily News and New York Magazine. And my Greenwheeling column, syndicated by Motor Matters, appeared in publications including the Houston Post and San Francisco Chronicle.
And, I have contributed to or edited more than a dozen USA and international guidebooks for Michelin, Fodor’s and DK.
You can find several of my NYC itineraries on Bindu Trips, where I was the senior NYC travel advisor.
My latest guidebook is 100 Things to do in New York City Before You Die, published May 2019.
It’s filled with the best of NYC, some of which appears here, on NYC on the Cheap.
Order directly from the publisher, on Amazon, or Barnes & Noble.
Or, email me at [email protected] for an autographed copy, or to speak to your group.
My previous guidebook is Peaceful Places New York City, with 100+ places to find tranquility and serenity in this city better known for sensory overload.
It’s sold out at bookstores and online sellers, so if you want a copy, email me; I have a few copies left, which I’m happy to autograph.
Disclaimer
NYC on the Cheap posts deals as we find them. But you know the drill:
Prices and promotions can change at any time and without notice, and sometimes when a national chain says the offer is good at “participating locations” that doesn’t include their outpost in Times Square. If one of the offers we told you about here isn’t as we wrote, please let us know.
Remember what I’ve been saying and writing for years - If a deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
NYC on the Cheap is part of the Living on the Cheap network, a group of local websites published by more than 25 professional writers and frugalistas.
