Save the date: Celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the naming of Madison Square at a giant FREE birthday party in the park, Madison Square Park, of course, on Saturday, Sept 6th. There will be a family-friendly fair with a historic theme in the afternoon, followed by a contemporary one later in the day.
The event kicks off with historically themed activities popular in the early 1800’s and 1900’s to celebrate the bicentennial anniversary of the naming of historic Madison Square. The fair will feature period-themed performances, interactive games, art, food, and refreshments highlighting these eras.
TASK Party, 6:00pm – 9:00 pm
The historic fair transitions into an experiential, contemporary art party called TASK. Created by Brooklyn-based artist Oliver Herring, TASK is an improvisational art experience where participants follow two simple rules. First, participants write down a task on a piece of paper and add it to a designated “TASK pool.” Then, they pull a task from that pool and interpret it any way they want, using props or materials provided. When a task is completed, a participant writes a new task, pulls a new task, and so on. Music and cuisine reflecting the many cultures of present-day New York City will also be provided.

The MAD. SQ. 200 Historic Daytime Fair is 3 PM to 6 PM, with games, food and other attractions that would have been popular back in the 189s and early 1900s.
From 6 PM to 9 PM, it becomes a contemporary art fair with activities similar to a scavenger hunt, and contemporary food, including from Madison Square Park’s most famous current resident, Shake Shack.
Mad. Sq. 200 is presented by New York Life, housed in a landmark building adjoining the park.

Named after the country’s fourth president, James Madison, the area surrounding and including current Madison Square Park received its name in 1814. The original Madison Square Garden adjoined the park and took its name from its location, which has followed it to two more locations, Eighth Avenue and 50sth Street and now at Eighth Avenue and 34th St.
