Visit five top NYC museums free: includes MOMA, Guggenheim, Whitney

NYC on the CheapWant to bypass the $20 admission charge — more or less — at NYC museums?  Take advantage of the FREE museum admission days and times, but know that the museum will be crowded with others also taking advantage of the NYC museum freebie.

Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) — Fridays, 4 – 8 PM, to see a world class collection of paintings, drawings and sculptures by Picasso, Monet, Van Gogh and Wahol, and sculptures by Rodin and Moore.  Don’t miss the MOMA outdoor Sculpture Garden, which gets my vote for one of the most peaceful places in NYC.

Whitney Museum of Art — Pay what you wish Fridays, 6-9 PM, for five floors of modern masters including Georgia O’Keefe, Edward Hopper, and cutting edge videographers.

Neue Gallerie — Free the first Friday of the month, 6-8 PM, to see contemporary European art and furnishings

Guggenheim Museum — Pay what you wish every Saturday, 5:45 –  7:45 PM, see Picasso, Chagall and more in a building that is itself a work of art.

Brooklyn Museum — Free all day the first Saturday of each month, thanks to Target First Saturdays.  Visit one of the most extensive collections of ancient Egyptian art and artifacts anywhere in the world, and much less crowded than the Egyptian wing at the Met Museum in Manhattan.
