NYC loses another venerable icon with the closing of Manganaro’s on Ninth Avenue, just short of its 100th anniversary of dishing up some of the worlds most memorable sandwiches and sit-down restaurant serving homemade pasta dishes and other Italian favorites. The four generation family-owned restaurant is another victim of rising rents and a neighborhood that’s gentrifying from its working class roots to something more fashionable, including competition from the upscale Chelsea Market a short walk away. This is the second Manganaro’s to close in one year — exactly one year ago, on March 1, 2011, NYC OTC reported that Manganaro’s Ninth Avenue Deli closed. The Manganaro’s website hints at re-opening elsewhere. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
