NYCOTC wants you to get from JFK, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty to your NYC hotel without getting scammed or stressed. Yesterday we told you about the cheapest way, as little as $2.50 by public transportation – subways, busses and commuter trains. See information here. Here are additional NYC transportation choices:
Airport express bus: There is an express bus every 20 or 30 minutes between JFK and LaGuardia and midtown Manhattan. Fares are $13 (LaGuardia) and $16 (JFK) on NYC Airporter. There is a bus every 15 minutes between Newark Liberty and midtown Manhattan on Newark Express. Fares are $16. Both bus companies have drop-offs at Grand Central Terminal and Port Authority Bus Terminal on 42nd St., and Penn Station at 34th St., so be sure to ask your hotel which stop is closest.
Shared ride vans: AirLink and SuperShuttle both provide shared van rides between the airport and your destination, for about $20, depending on airport and destination, in clean and comfortable vans. The problem is you cannot reserve in advance. You must show up at the ticket counter with your baggage. The wait for the next available ride is 15-45 minutes, depending on demand, and if you are unlucky enough to be picked up first or dropped off last, you could be driving around for an hour or more.
Taxis: There is a flat fare of $52 for taxis between JFK and anywhere in the city limits for up to four passengers per taxi. If there are multiple stops, the flat rate ends after the first stop and the trip starts over as a regular metered fare. Trips from LaGuardia are on the meter; there is no flat fare. Figure on $25-$30 depending on destination and time of day. There also are 50 cent surcharges for late night travel, and a NY state surcharge, plus any bridge or tunnel tolls. NYC taxis are licensed, and the dispatcher will give you a card with the driver’s registration information in case you have a problem to report. Taxis to NYC from Newark Liberty can be $80 or more.
Car services: Too many to mention. Expect to pay 10% to 25% over taxi rates from any of the NYC area airports for a Lincoln Town Car or similar.
The “need a ride” guys: Drivers hang out at the baggage area, hustling rides. Some are licensed and insured “black car” drivers whose client didn’t show up, and they are looking for replacement passengers. Others are un-licensed and un-insured scammers. NYCOTC warning: avoid getting into any vehicle at JFK or LaGuardia that does not have the letters TLC on its license plate. TLC means they are licensed by the NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission and have proper insurance.
