How Shanghai Saved 20,000 Jews in WWII

This is a webinar discussion with Prof. Fred Lazin about the Viennese diplomat who signed some 20,000 transit papers for Jews to leave Austria, many of them winding up in Shanghai, others in South America and India. It is sponsored by Temple Emanu-el, which hosted a live, in-person discussion on the subject last year, including several survivors of the Jewish community in Shanghai and their decendents.

I attended a similar session last year, and had the privilege of meeting the daughter of a survivor, who lives in the Tri-State area. I actually took a photo of her mother’s wedding gown at the synagogue in Shanghai, which is now a museum to this Disapora.

  • Read my story about my visit to Shanghai on Orbitz

The webinar is FREE at 6:30pm.  Temple Emanu-el also is accepting contributions to support such efforts.

There are two ways to enter the virtual classroom:

Via Zoom

  • This will allow you to ask questions through typed messages.
  • If you don’t already have Zoom on your computer or tablet, download Zoom  before the start of the course.
  • Then, at the time of the seminar, just copy this link into your browser: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_h2bQVsSxSYC_LTGpF-7xhA

Via Livestream

  •  you can livestream the class from Temple Emanu-El’s website

census 2020Census Digital Weekend

If you haven’t already, click here to complete the 2020 Census form online—you can also respond by phone or by mail.

The questionnaire takes less than five minutes to complete and does not ask citizenship questions.

It is absolutely crucial that you respond to the census, because your reply helps determine how much money NYC gets from the federal government.

Your reply helps fund NYC schools and other crucial services.

Your reply also helps determine whether NYC and NY State keep or lose Congressional representation.

Help shape the future of your community—no matter who you are, we all count. #2020Census
