NYC store of the week: Rizzoli Bookstore, known for its specialty art and design books, has re-opened at a new location, with beautiful books in a beautiful setting of gilded bookshelves, chandeliers and Old World charm.
You could say Rizzoli is returning to its roots with the re-opening of its flagship store in the historic St. James building on Broadway, between 25th and 26th Streets.
You might remember that last year Rizzoli was forced to leave its grand townhouse on 57th St., between Fifth and Sixth Aves., to make way for another condo high rise for the super-rich on what is now being called Millionaires Row.
Luckily, Rizzoli removed much of the interior features before to install in the NoMad location, including the gilded cherry wood bookcases and iron chandeliers, and added such new browsing-friendly features as custom-made wallpaper by Fornasetti Milano, depicting hot air balloons and Italian cities floating through the clouds.
The NoMad space is 5,000 square-feet, and will include book launches and readings, film screenings and panel discussions, and ticketed concerts and curated exhibitions starting in the fall.
Laura Donnini, CEO of RCS Libri, the book publishing arm of Rizzoli’s Milan-based parent company says she hopes New Yorkers and book lovers “ visiting from all points national and international—to embrace the 21st century version of their favorite bookstore.”
The Rizzoli Bookstore includes fashion, interior design, art, architecture, photography, design, and literature in Italian, French, Spanish, and English, plus rare editions for collectors. There is also an extensive collection of books on New York City. Not surprisingly, it focuses on photography, art, design and history.
There’s also a section of European magazines and newspapers, compact discs and DVDs, and fine stationery for those of us who still write letters in addition to emails.
Hours are Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays 10:30am to 7:30pm, Thursdays and Fridays 10:30am to 9pm. Closed Sundays in August, but starting in September Sunday hours will be 11am to 5pm.
Rizzoli Bookstore, 1133 Broadway, between 25th and 26th Street, (212) 759-2424.
