The Disney favorite The Lion King is being altered for autistic children and their caregivers, for a one-time special performance. It’s the idea of the Theater Development Fund, a non-profit group whose goal is to increase access to live theater. Ticket prices also have been reduced for the matinee, on Sunday, October 2nd, with the most expensive orchestra seats priced at $79 instead of $133. Adjustments to the the long-running show to make it autism-friendly include lowering the volume on jarring sounds, such as the lion’s roar, and toning down bright lights which could upset autistic children. And TDF is providing quiet areas beanbag chairs and other amenities, and autism counselors will be on hand. According to Crain’s New York Business, tickets are selling out fast.
