Oktoberfest celebrations are officially underway in New York City, with special events at NYC’s German-style brewpubs, especially at Lorelei Restaurant and Biergarden on the Lower East Side, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. Get there at 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 5th, when the place opens, for FREE beer – until the first keg runs out. Then hang around to sample 12 kinds of sausages and wursts in the annual “Sausage Fest”.
My personal favorite – thanks to my Bavarian-born mother – is weisswurst, a delicate veal sausage that’s eaten with sweet mustard and a bread-like pretzel. There also are Wednesday beer tasting events, for $55.

Loreley is at 7 Rivington Street, between Bowery and Chrystie.
