The New York City Police Department is launching a summer driving ticket blitz this week for drivers who talk or text while driving, The 24-hour NYPD crackdown is Tuesday, June 22, and will be in all be in all five Big Apple boroughs. Using a hand-held cellphone while driving is against the law in New York City, as it is in many other cities and states. Anybody caught talking and texting on a hand-held iPhone, Android, BlackBerry or other PDA or cellphone will face a $130 fine. The NYPD gives out an average of 617 summonses day for illegal cellphone use. During a similar one-day cellphone crackdown in March 2010, the NYPD issued ten times that number — 6,882 summonses — which brought in some $800,000 in fines.
Of course New York City can use the money, but it’s really about the safety of pedestrians and other drivers and avoiding death and injury caused by distracted driving.
OMG, texting while driving is as dumb and dangerous as DWI and DUI. And that’s not me saying it — according to a recent New York Times/CBS poll, 90% of adults think hand-held cellphones while driving should be agains the law.
