It was called the Kosher Nostra, Jewish gangsters familiar to many of us from the film The Godfather, for their roles in crime and gambling from Cuba to Las Vegas. Meet them, virtually, of course, in a special walking tour of the Lower East Side.
Get up close and uncomfortable with Arnold Rothstein, Meir Lansky and Bugsy Siegel (pictured here), who got their bad starts on the streets of New York before extending their influence nationally, sometimes cooperating with the “regular” Mafia, sometimes not.
Use your imagination to evoke what once existed, viewing sites associated with these Jewish gangsters known as the Kosher Rostra. Your guide is Rabbi David Kalb, who also explores the intersection of morality, power, assimilation, and anti-Semitism.
The Kosher Rostra walking tour is organized by the Lower East Side Jewish Conservancy, on Sunday, Sept. 18 2016.
Meet across the street from the Museum at Eldridge Street located at 12 Eldridge Street -between Canal and Division Streets at 10:30AM.
Tickets are $22 for adults, $20 for Seniors and Students ($2 additional the day of the event) . Purchase tickets online with no service charge.
