NYC news you might have missed

POSTED BY
Evelyn Kanter

nyc on the cheapThis is an occasional feature on NYC on the Cheap: a recap of recent New York City news you might have missed. Top of our list is the news that NYC is expected to welcome a record number of tourists in 2016, nearly 60 million.

Let’s hope they all won’t try to crowd into Times Square, visit the High Line or take the subway at the same time.  Here’s the full report in the New York Times.

TFF goes digital:

The Tribeca Film Festival will include digital content for the first time this year.  We can’t call them films, event though they are film length, because they are digital – either produced or distributed by a digital-only content producer. Read the full story on Crain’s New York Business.  Will TFF be renamed the Tribeca Film and Digital Content Festival?  Unlikely.  Tribeca Film Festival 2016 is April 13-24.

Modernizing LaGuardia:

The pricetag for modernizing LaGuardia Airport has climbed again, by more than $1 billion to $5.3 billion. The project’s rising costs and changing nature are causing tension within the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which faces other budget demands, including a billion dollar-plus project to modernize the Port Authority Bus Terminal on 42nd St.  Read the full story in  The Wall Street Journal

Upgrading Lower Manhattan Parks:

Lower Manhattan parks devastated by 9/11 and Hurricane Sandy are getting more than $50 million from a NYC real estate developer to enhance what’s described as cultural, recreational and educational opportunities.  Whatever you call it, it’s all good, including money for the annual World Trade Center Tribute in Light, and funding for the South Street Museum.  Here’s the project details from the office of Governor Cuomo.

Restaurants go to the dogs:

NYC and NY State restaurants now can legally welcome dogs, but outdoors only, and only when they are leashed. The NY State assembly passed the canine dining law 60-to-zero. It goes into effect in time for spring and summer dining with Fido.  Read the full report in the New York Times.
