The demise of Prime Burger, mid-Manhattan’s classic and award-winning coffee shop — because the building’s new owner kicked them out — is making us all feel nostalgic for the classic luncheonettes and burger joints that remain.
Lucky for us, Chock Full o’ Nuts has returned, with the first of several planned locations in Chelsea. And it’s still a bargain.
Check out the Breakfast Special, which you can get all day — $6.95 for three eggs, two strips of bacon, home fries, toast and unlimited coffee.
This NYC meal deal is at the Chock Full o’ Nuts restaurant at 25 West 23rd St., between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, right down the street from chic and trendy Eataly, where just one cup of coffee costs $3, no free refills.
Or, opt for the $7.95 lunch special, which includes a cup of soup — cold soup for the hot weather — a salad, half a sandwich, and unlimited soda or coffee, iced or hot. Unfortunately, the original and iconic nutted cheese sandwich that I loved as a kid is not on the lunch sandwich special list, but you can order it by itself for $5.95.
The coffee, of course, is Chock Full o’ Nuts own brand. The restaurant is open daily, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
A bit of NYC history —
This is the first Chock Full o’ Nuts coffee shop to open in NYC in more than 30 years, with plans to open additional locations.
There once were more than 100 of them all over the city, as those of us who have lived here for more than a New York minute will remember. The company closed the coffee shops to concentrate on selling its Heavenly brand coffee in supermarkets.
