We all know that Hurricane Sandy devastated the Tri-State area shorline, from the Hudson River and Long Island Sound to the Altantic Ocean. A special New York Water Taxi cruise on Tuesday, June 18th, surveys the damage – and the restoration – from Hoboken to Gowanus, Red Hook and Bay Ridge to Staten Island. It’s supposed to be a two-hour tour, but the one I was on last week was more like three hours and included a stop in front of the Statue of Liberty for a picture perfect sunset.
The “Beyond Sandy” harbor includes three expert guides, from the US Army Corps of Engineers, the commissioner of the Statey Island Ferry system, and the co-founder of a ReStore Red Hook , the community group dedicated to rebuilding the Brooklyn neighborhood devastated by Sandy, talking about how to protect NYC shorelines in the future. Also, a portion of your tickets support the work of the Working Harbor Committee, which supports NYC harbors. For tickets, go to www.WorkingHarbor.org, or call 212-742-1969.
The Beyond Sandy tour leaes from Pier 16, at the foot of Fulton Street, South Street Seaport, 6:30 p.m. Get there early and have dinner, or at least snacks, and support the businesses of the South Street Seaport which have reopened recently after months of digging out and rebuilding.
