Instead of parking yourself on a block of ice, here’s how to keep your cool – duck into one of the dozens of spray showers in NYC parks and playgrounds and streets with fire hydrant spray caps.
You’ll have to share the cooling water with giggling kids, but that’s part of the fun.
There are spray showers in all five boroughs. Search the NYC Parks website by borough or by zipcode.
Central Park has the most sprays in any park, with one dozen.
The spray showers in parks and playgrounds operate only on days when the temperature is 80 degrees or higher, you’ll dry of quickly, with or without a towel.
If you are not near a park or playground spray shower, please do not open a fire hydrant without an approved spray cap.
Anybody over the age of 18 can go to any FDNY firehouse and request one.
More than just wasting water, opening a hydrant wastes lowers water pressure, which endangers the area in case of a fire.
The city-approved nozzles limit the amount of water that would burst from a hydrant if it were opened illegally from 1,000 gallons per minute to just 25, according to the FDNY.
The spray caps can also save you a trip to jail, since wrenching open a hydrant without permission can result in 30-days in jail or a $1,000 fine, according to the NY Daily News.
