NYC Free: Photoville 2017

POSTED BY
Evelyn Kanter

Photoville 2017@nyccheapPhotoville, the annual FREE photography festival returns to Brooklyn Bridge Park bigger and better than before, feauturng work by more than 500 visual artists, plus dozens of seminars and and workshops, outdoor projection shows and more.

The installation is Sept. 13-24, with more than 75 exhibitions housed in and around a collection of 50+ repurposed shipping containers. One of the participating artists this year is former White House photograhper Pete Souza, and a recorded conversation with President Obama is part of one section of the exhibit focusing on immigration and climate change.

Containers have a single theme, such as photos of athletes, grandmothers, hip-hop performers, even dictators.

Opening night features filmmakers, photographers, musicians, and inspirational collaborators from Newest Americans, a storytelling project about immigration and American identity. Audience members can watch boxing transform the lives of immigrant youth, meet hijabi girls who embrace their feminism, and hear a classical Syrian ensemble perform waslah.

Other special events include:

To celebrate New York Fashion week, New York Magazine’s Director of Photography Jody Quon leads a discussion about the Magazine’s history and approach to fashion, featuring Holly Andres’ “The 43-Day Fashion Shoot,” a photo portfolio commissioned by the magazine which sent Andres around the nation to meet American women and their Americas, and dressing them in some of the season’s clothes.

Penumbra returns with their Tintype Portrait Sessions, Leica is hosting workshops and demonstrations under their big tent, and there’s a special new initiative Women Photograph to present an all day skills-building workshop.

There also are five evening events in the popular beer garden, kicking off with The Newest Americans by our friends Talking Eyes Media and The FENCE on opening night, with beverages from Smorgasburg and Brooklyn Brewery

Check the Photoville website for the full schedule of events and exhibit descriptions.  All events are FREE, although some require registration to ensure space.
