The annual Open House New York Weekend unlocks the doors of more than 100 of NYC’s most important buildings, for the extraordinary opportunity to go behind the scenes and meet the people who design, build, and preserve the greatest city on the planet.
Open House New York 2017 is October 14/15, and includes tours, talks, performances and other special events in all five boroughs, more than half of which are FREE.
The full list of participating sites is available available tomorrow, Wed., Oct. 4, to make reservations where those are needed to ensure space.
Here’s where to find FREE printed event guides:
- inside issues of Time Out New York, available at the magazine’s FREE street distribution locations;
- west elm stores in Manhatan and Brooklyn;
- select sites in all five boroughs including the Brooklyn Public Library, Queens Museum and Federal Hall National Monument on Wall St. .
Here’s what you need to know:
140+ Open Access Sites
More than half of participating sites are FREE to explore and require no advance reservations. Make sure to check each site’s listing once they are available, as sites have different hours.
The schedule includes such favorites from past years as the Brooklyn Army Terminal, the Little Red Lighthouse in Washington Heights and Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx.
The New York Transit Museum will offer tours of its archives, with thousands of artifacts illustrating the history of mass transportation in NYC. city
New additions include Governors Island’s Ligget Hall, a former military barrack, which will open up its secret archway gymnasium to the public for the first time, and the American Copper Buildings, the dramatic twin new angled skyscrapers near the East River, will give one of the first tours of the skybridge linking them.
Other new additions include the research center at the newly-opened Cornell Tech on Roosevelt Island, the sprawling apartment complex that is Waterside Plaza, the Gilded Age mansion that houses the French Embassy, and the Residences at PS 186 and Boys & Girls Club of Harlem, a school that has been converted into affordable housing and a community center.
100 Advance Reservation Sites
While the majority of participating sites are Open Access and FREE without reservations, some sites and tours require advance reservations. These will begin the day after the full list becomes available, on Thurs., Oct. 5, at 11 am. As always, the most popular sites fill up first.
There’s also a ticketed Launch Party on Oct. 12 at Jane’s Carousel at Brooklyn Bridge Park, supporting OHNY.
