NYC Free: Open Garden Day in NYC Parks

POSTED BY
Evelyn Kanter

gardening in NYCSome of NYC’s best cool, green, quiet spots are the community gardens dotting playgrounds, open spaces between apartment buildings, even rooftop urban farms which grow fresh fruits and veggies for local residents.

There are more than 550 community gardens around town, and the NYC Parks Dept. and GreenThumb, the largest community gardening program in the USA, are celebrating them all this weekend.

Open Garden Day is your chance to find out about, and tour, these community gardens, meet the volunteer gardeners, even contribute to their efforts by volunteering or making a donation.

On Saturday, July 14, dozens of community gardens in NYC are opening their doors to the public, 11am to 3pm. .

Family-friendly activities will include arts and music, greening and composting, food and environmental justice events, garden workdays, and much more.

There are too many locations to list here, but you can find an Open Garden Day community garden in each of the five NYC boroughs.

The open gardens represent some of the more than 550 community gardens overseen by GreenThumb, the largest community gardening program in the country.

Gardens range from small community spaces meant for relaxation to large plazas and urban farms.

More than 20,000 community gardeners volunteer their time to manage these vital open spaces.

About GreenThumb

GreenThumb provides programming and material support and technical assistance to over 550 community gardens in New York City.

GreenThumb is currently celebrating its 40th anniversary with a year of activities and events.
