NYC Free: Museum Mile Festival 2017 is June 13

POSTED BY
Evelyn Kanter

www.nyconthecheap.com The 39th Annual Museum Mile Festival turns one mile of Fifth Avenue from 82nd St. to 105th Streets into New York City’s biggest block party, with FREE museum admission, music, food, activities for the kids, and more.

The street fair is Tuesday, June 13. The FREE museum admission is to ten world-class museums that give Museum Mile its name, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Jewish Museum, Museum of the City of New York and the Guggenheim Museum.

New Yorkers also can get FREE admission to museums with the NYC ID card, available to NYC residents only.

Enjoy cabaret-style music for grownups, chalk drawing on the sidewalk with artists from the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum of the Smithsonian Institution, and more.

Check out El Museo del Barrio’s “UPTOWN: Nasty Women/Bad Hombres” show that explores racism, homophobia, and sexism, and the Cooper Hewitt/Smithsonian Design Museum’s jazz age collection.

Adults can learn how to salsa, draw from a live model or pretend they’re in a work of art, while kids will have a ton of activities to choose from, like making their own musical instruments or climbing on imaginative playgrounds.

Museum Mile Festival History

  • Begun as an initiative to spur the development of new museum audiences and to increase support for the arts during the fiscal crisis of the 1970s, Museum Mile was formed as a consortium by the museums that share the Fifth Avenue address. The first festival, in June of 1978, was an instant success, exposing both New Yorkers and visitors to an incredible collection of New York’s artistic riches.  Over the years, Museum Mile Festival heas promoted public awareness through increased visibility, accessibility and attendance at all the museums, and brought many New Yorkers to upper Fifth Avenue for the first time.
