Celebrate Women’s History Month and learn how to become a Wikipedia editor at a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon for women, who represent just 10% of editors at Wikipedia, the world’s largest source of free knowldge online.
Learn how to become a Wikipedia editor at this special FREE event on Sunday, March 11, at the Jewish Museum.
The are three hours of Wikipedia Training and Editing, with experts from Art + Feminism, a campaign dedicated to improving coverage of cis and transgender women, feminism, and the arts on Wikipedia.
Wikipedia Edit-a-thon is designed to preserve the stories of women artists on Wikipedia, along with expanding the number of women editors on Wikipedia
In addition, there is a gallery tour and talk with artists Joan Semmel and Arlene Shechet, whose work is now on view in the recently-opened exhibit, Scenes from the Collection. (Work on display by one of the women artists is featured above.)

It’s an extraordinary display of apparel from more than 20 countries, into the many facets of Jewish identity and culture, and a close-up of craftsmanship and design that will appeal to any fashion fan.
Items include the influence of local Islamic culture on Jewish dress, focusing on veils and wraps from Afghanistan, Iraq, Uzbekistan and other countries where there once were strong and vibrant Jewish communities, and where Jews and Muslims sometimes dressed exactly the same way.
The extraordinary range of textile designs and clothing illuminates the story of how diverse global cultures have thrived, interacted, and inspired each other for centuries, and how we balance personal, social and religious fashion choices.
I saw it recently and was dazzled. But I digress.

Wikipedia Edit-a-thon schedule:
2 pm: Gallery Talk with artists Joan Semmel and Arlene Shechet, moderated by Rebecca Shaykin, Leon Levy Assistant Curator
3 pm: Wikipedia Training with JiaJia Fei, Director of Digital and Michael Mandiberg, Co-Founder, Art + Feminism
4 – 6 pm: Editing Session
No prior Wikipedia editing experience necessary. To participate in the Edit-a-thon portion of the event, bring a laptop and power cord.
Before arriving at the Museum, please create a Wikipedia account. Reference materials will be provided.
