NYC Free: Design Show in Times Square

POSTED BY
Evelyn Kanter

best NYC free eventsDesign Pavilion returns to Times Square with ten days of FREE interactive design-driven installations and talks with top designers, architects and urban visionaries who are changing the NYC and other cities around the world.

One important display, to anyone concerned with the urban environment, is eco-friendly new designs for single-use packaging, including take-out containers, to reduce waste by restaurants, delis and food carts, and reduce litter in NYC streets, subways and waterways.

Design Pavilion in Times Square is the public hub for the New York City’s official design week, with many related design events around the city, most of them ticketed.

Ynyc free eventsou can find out about those at the NYCxDESIGN Information Kiosk in Times Square.

The theme of this year’s Times Square event is From This Day Forward, and includes the introduction of some modern and playful new public seating for Times Square.

Here’s what you can experience FREE at this year’s Design Pavilion  in Times Square, May 12-20:

US premier of custom-designed inflatable pavilion
The UK-based, fast architecture and lightweight design brand appropriately named Inflate is debuting this large-scale, inflatable structure, approimately 2,000 square feet and 25-feet-high. This inflatable pavilion is an intricate and uniquely light and soft form large enough to house special exhibitions within its sheltered space.

Lighting was designed by L’Observatoire International using Philips Lighting innovations to highlight the form of the structure both inside and out, bringing what’s described as  “depth through a play of light and opacity”.

50 New York Artists: A Public Art Exhibition
In celebration of New York Magazine’s 50th anniversary, 50 artists were invited to create 50 magazine covers that express what New York City looks to them right now. The project began with Alex Katz, who revisited the “Subway Drawings” series he made when studying at Cooper Union in the 1940s and whose new drawings appeared in New York‘s anniversary issue this past October.

Another artist will create, in real time, a 15-foot-tall New York Magazine cover in Times Square, adding to the dozens of covers that will be released throughout the city in a rolling, surprising public art project.

Pratt Institute presents The Future of Take-Out, an exhibition of student solutions
This collaboration with the New York State Department of Environment Conservation (DEC) challenges Pratt students to explore a range of solutions that focus on reducing waste, eliminating one-time use packages for fast food, plastic alternatives, marine-friendly packaging and methods and systems for packaging and transporting take-out food.

The goal, of course, is to eliminate the pollution of New York’s waterways and Harbor by the litter of fast food plastic utensils, containers, straws and bags offered by the city’s take-out restaurants, delis, and food carts.

New York City’s world-famous Pratt Institute is transforming academic excellence in architecture, art, design, information studies, and liberal arts and sciences through its defining heritage and visionary future.

Bright New Things – work of emerging designers
An international “Bright New Things” competition challenges students and recent graduates from around the world to wrap an everyday object using Avery Dennison’s graphic materials.

Four winning designs will be chosen for exhibition within a stunning, large glass cube powered by Avery Dennison’s Janela™ and Vela™ technologies, for a glimpse into the future of the consumer experience.

MAGIS with HERMAN MILLER
The local New York community, design schools and design students, who developed a to a site-specific installation to creatively showcase the company’s iconic chairs.  The students were asked to develop 2D artwork for the backdrop walls.

Special digital displays and broadcasts
Custom-designed, digital animations by audiovisual design collective Circus Family, based in The Netherlands, will show on Superior Digital’s spectacular digital signage  at West 42nd and 49th Streets, the gateways to Times Square.

Design Pavilion and Nasdaq share a commitment to the role of design and technology in our future, and will feature daily live broadcast interviews with design industry stars, engaging more than two million Nasdaq followers.

AIGA designers use design to engage citizens in democracy
AIGA, the professional association for design, is showcasing its Design for Democracy: “Building Community Power” messages and graphics on the Nasdaq MarketSite Tower and Marquee digital screens at 4 Times Square. Nasdaq will share the AIGA members’ content on the Tower and Marquee, as well as across its social media channels. t

Since 1998, AIGA has been advocating for design for civic engagement through voter campaigns, education, registration, access, and civic participation.

Debut of  a new line of furniture designed to enhance creativity
MIO is a line of modern sustainable furnishings for creative spaces. ‘The Work is Play Collection’, to be shown for the first time at Design Pavilion, is the result of research into the habits and activities of adults in their living and workspaces.

‘The Work is Play’ line brings play to the forefront as a means to spontaneously interact and share with others while enhancing creativity and communication.

zU-studio presents anti-gravity seating for “Re-lying”
