nyc cheap weekend As always, there’s plenty to do in NYC free and cheap on weekends, and this mid-May is no exception. Unless a price is mentioned, events are FREE, unless you buy stuff at one of the many street fairs this weekend.

The best free things to do in NYC
any time of year
 Today in New York:

Bowling Green Park Fair: 9am-6pm, 
Broadway and Whitehall Street

Today through weekend:

NY Bike Expo: Annual event featuring dozens of bicycle and accessory manufacturers, bike tour operators and more, including seminars and giveaways.  FREE, today and tomorrow, at  
Penn Pavilion, 33rd St. and Seventh Ave
. Full information on nycbikeexpo.com website.

NYC Tattoo Convention: One of the largest gatherings of its kind, with dozens of tattoo artists and other tattoo vendors, today through Sunday at the Metropolitan Pavillion in Chelsea.  Ticketed event, $25 a day or $60 for a three day pass.  Full information on nyctattooconvention.com website.  

Artists in the Kitchen-Hell’s Kitchen Art Festival: Watch artists at work and tour galleries, FREE, today through Sunday.  
Venues throughout Hell’s Kitchen.  Check website for venues and schedule.  artistsinthekitchen.org/social. 

TOAST Art Walk (Tribeca Open Artist Studio Tour): Watch artists at work tour galleries, FREE, today through Monday. Detailed schedule at toastartwalk.com.

 Saturday in New York

Taste of Tribeca: 
Greenwich Street and Duane Street. Scroll down to see full information on the NYC on the Cheap posting earlier this week.

Times Square Spring Fest: Street fair with a theatrical theme  10am-4pm, 
46th Street between Sixth and Seventh Aves.

9th Annual Dance Parade and Festival:  Dancing in the streets. Groups of folk, swing, lindy, tango, ballroom, hip-hop and more. 
Broadway and 21st Street. Full details on danceparade.org website.

Saturday and Sunday in New York:

42nd Annual Ninth Avenue International Food Festival: On Ninth Avenue between 42nd and 57th Streets. Scroll down to see the NYC on the Cheap posting earlier this week with full details including the list of participating restaurants, cafes and bakeries. Noon to 5pm both days.

Sunday in New York:

Summer On The Hudson: The annual Mamapalooza Outdoor Extravaganza with games and exhibits for kids and parents  11am-5pm
 at Pier i, Riverside Park, W 68th St and Riverside Blvd

52nd Street Spring Fair:  Theater and music themed street fair on 52nd Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues, 10am to 4pm. 6th and 7th Avenue

Fifth Avenue Fair: Park Slope’s annual street fair on Sunday includes an Art Walk, a vintage car show, kid-friendly music and dance performances and more.  FREE.  Fifth Avenue between Sterling Place and 12th St., noon to 6pm.

Videology: Give a farewell toast to Mad Men showing on the big screen  at this combination restaurant, bar and screening room in Williamsburg. From 9pm.

NYC weekend flea markets and food fairs:

Smorgasburg: The popular Brooklyn foodie festival is back outdoors every weekend through fall, with more than 75 local vendors selling top quality sodas, gluten-free sodas, seafood and more.  Saturdays are in in East River State Park, and Sundays in Brooklyn Bridge Park.  Full details on the Made In Brooklyn Tours website.

Fulton Stall Market at the South Street Seaport:  A new farmer’s market and more.  The more includes FREE Saturday morning cartoons for the kids and cooking demonstrations for the grownups.  Details here.
