NYC free & cheap weekend Jan. 11/12

POSTED BY
Evelyn Kanter

NYC on the CheapThere always are free and frugal family-friendly events to enjoy in NYC on weekends, and NYOTC likes to share the news with fellow cheapskates and misers. As always, nothing on the NYC on the Cheap list of weekend events and activities costs more than $15, because NYCOTC believes you can be a NYC cheapskate and still  have fun in the greatest city in the world.  Unless otherwise noted, events are FREE.

Free classic film screening – This Sunday’s free screening at the NYPL Mid-Manhatttan Branch is His Girl Friday, the 1940 madcap classic starring Cary Grant, Rosalind Russell and Ralph Bellamy, based on the classic play The Front Page.  Starts t 2 p.m. The Mid-Manhattan library is across Fifth Avenue from the main branch guarded by the two stone lion.  Event website

New York Transit Museum Holiday Train Show at Grand Central, Centennial Edition –The holidays are over, and the tourists have gone home, so this is a quiet time to enjoy the train show. Miniature – not toy – trains – toot around the tracks at this popular annual exhibit through the end of January.  Full details here in a recent NYCOTC posting.

Dino-Light at Symphony Space – Take the kids to this inventive show featuring huge glow-in-the-dark puppets and happy music.  NYCOTC has half-price tickets, at $12. Dino-Light is Saturday, Dec. 11, shows are 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Wintergreen Festival at Museum at Eldridge Street – Also called the A Tu B’Shvat Celebration, this fun-filled afternoon features a concert by Bash the Trash, which uses instruments made from recycled objects, plus geneology workshops and more.  Tu B’Shvat celebrates the pending arrival of spring.  Tickets are $7 for children and $10 for the adults they bring along.  Sunday, 1-4 p.m.  Museum website

If you have an event you’d like to be included in the NYC on the Cheap weekend calendar, let us know at nyconthecheap@yahoo.com, or Twitter@nycheap.

Have fun and be a NYC cheapskate with NYC on the Cheap.
