There’s always lots going on in NYC during the week, and this week is no different. Here are the top FREE and cheap events to put on your calendar. As always, NYCOTC features only events $25 or less, so you can enjoy The Big Apple without taking big bites out of your budget.
Through Wednesday
Canstruction 2017 – See gravity-defying constructions made of cans. This annual FREE exhibit at the World Financial Center is taken apart at the end of the event, and the cans of food are distributed to feed NYC’s hungry.
Through Sunday
FREE Admission to the Museum of the City of New York – To mark the 1-year anniversary of New York at Its Core. This amazing and comprehensive exhibit covers the entire, dramatic, 400-year sweep of New York history alongside an interactive look at the city’s future. Tuesday
Greater Gotham: A History of New York City from 1898 to 1919 – Author Miike Wallace picks up the history of NYC in 1898, where the Pulitzer Prize-winning Gotham left off, beginning with the consolidation of the five boroughs and ending just after WW1, this long-awaited sequel surveys two decisive decades that saw the city’s physical and population growth into the world’s second-largest metropolis and a center of global finance. Mike Wallace is a Distinguished Professor of History at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, specializing in the history of New York City. Gotham, written with Edwin G. Burrows, won the 1999 Pulitzer Prize in History. In 2000, Wallace founded The Gotham Center for New York City History at The Graduate Center, CUNY. At the Skyscraper Museum in Battery Park, 6:30pm-8pm. RSVP absolutely required for admission, to programs@skyscraper.org.
Salman Rushdie – Widely considered one of the greatest writers of modern times, British-Indian novelist and essayist Salman Rushdie was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his service to literature, elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and awarded the prestigious Man Booker Prize, so this is a special “author talk”. Rushdie is discussing his newest novel, The Golden House. Set against the backdrop of the Obama years, this modern American epic revolves around an enigmatic billionaire from foreign shores whose mystique is as irresistible to readers as to his fictional neighbors. At the Temple Emanu-El Streicker Center, 1 East 65th St., at 6:30pm. The $25 admission includes a copy of the book.

Wednesday
Where Does the Time Go… – Brooklyn-born visual artist Kambui Olujimi premieres his new film FREE. This is a mercurial journey, a collage of time, space, and sound, remembered and fragmented in equal parts, starring Irungu Mutu and Jessica Allie. The screening will feature a live musical score by acclaimed pianist Chris Pattishall and trumpeter Adam O’Farrill and will be followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker. 7:30pm at the David Ruben Atrium at Lincoln Center. Seating is first-come, first-served.
Thursday
Twelve trumpet players will perform Trumpet Cloud throughout Madison Square Park, FREE . The park Conservancy has commissioned this musical performance to accompany Erwin Redl’s Whiteout. 5pm to 6pm
Friday
Race slot cars to raise money for NYC Public Schools. For every participant at the Fordhub City of Tomorrow in the Oculus, Ford Motor Company and Tri-State Ford dealers will donate $10 to the Ford’s Drive 4UR School fund-raising program. Details here.
