  • FREE, one day only, Wed. Feb. 21, in Vanderbilt Hall.  Who is your favorite, most marvelous (sorry, couldn’t resist the pun) Super Hero?

NY Chilren's International Film Festival NY International Children’s Film Festival – Get tickets now for this popular annual event, screening the best new animation, live action, documentary and experimental films from across the globe. Enjoy more than 125 new films from over 30 countries, including behind-the-scenes talks with filmmakers.

  • The festival Feb. 23 to Mar. 4 at several movie venues in Chelsea.  Tickets are $14, or buy a multi-film pass.

einstein's brainEinstein’s Brain – For a vessel of such epic brilliance, Einstein’s brain met with a most ignoble end: it was spirited away – without permission – by the pathologist on call the night the genius died in Princeton. Einstein’s brain wound up in a basement, was almost tossed by the pathologist’s estranged wife, and eventually smuggled across the border into Canada. Why? Where is it now?  What have we learned from Einstein’s brain?

Find out the answers to these questions and more in a special FREE program at the Streicker Center at Temple Emanu-el, 6:30pm Wed., Feb. 21st.  Registration is required to ensure space.

Featuring a brilliant panel of Einstein experts:

  • Dr. Amir Amedi, internationally renowned brain scientist at the Hebrew University’s Department of Medical Neurobiology and adjunct research professor at the Sorbonne University
  • Taran Davies, cofounder of Cosmic Picture, producer of the award-winning IMAX documentary Journey to Mecca as well as of the forthcoming IMAX documentary Einstein’s Incredible Universe
  • George Duffield, cofounder of the Blue Marine Foundation, producer of acclaimed films such as Milk—as well as the upcoming IMAX Einstein documentary
  • The evening will be moderated by Ambassador Ido Aharoni.

Black History Month events NYCThe Summer of Law and Disorder: Harlem Riot of 1964 -The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture branch of the NYPL presents a panel discussion about the Harlem Riot of 1964 in the aftermath of the police shooting of ninth grader James Powell and the “law-and-order” policies championed by presidential contenders on the campaign trail of ’64. The Harlem Riot solicited a variety of responses from community stakeholders and precipitated a summer of urban unrest around the country.

Joining the conversation are Michael Flamm, Professor of History and author In the Heat of the Summer: The New York Riots of 1964 and the War on Crime; Lumumba Akinwole-Bandele, Senior Community Organizer for NAACP Legal Defense Fund. Book signing follows event.

broadway week discoun ticketsKids Night on Broadway – Get a FREE ticket to a top Broadway show for kids 18 and under, with an adult paying full price. Shows on offer include Anastasia, Spongebob Square Pants and The Lion King. This annual NYC event is designed to introduce the next generation of theater-goers to the magic of live theater.

  • Kids Night on Broadway 2018 is Tues., Feb. 27.

Check out special displays of rare children’s literature, watch classic cartoons, color, craft your own children’s books, and be ready to share your favorite youthful reading memories. Food and drinks available for purchase.

  • One-night-only specially curated collections display showcasing the Library children’s lit holdings from colonial New England to the early 20th century
  • A selection of classic kids’ cartoons on 16mm film: Dr. Seuss, Silly Symphony, and more.
  • Crafting with the collections: grab a drink and do some coloring of vintage illustrations from Beatrix Potter, Hans Christian Andersen, Mother Goose, and more; create your own illustrated children’s books.
  • Story time! Rediscover the childhood pleasure of being read to.
  • Quiet room with games, coloring, and puzzles
  • Music and dancing courtesy of DJ Reborn

You don’t need an NYPL library card to attend, but you must be 21+ to attend. Fri., Feb. 23 at 7pm, at the main NYPL building on Fifth Avenue guarded by those two famous lions.

nyc free events februaryGood Girls Galatine Night –  NBC premieres a new weekly series on Feb. 26th, after the 2018 Winter Olympics, about three suburban moms who get tired of struggling to make ends meet, and decide it’s time to stick up for themselves by robbing the local grocery store. It’s a comedy-infused drama that’s part “Thelma & Louise” and part “Breaking Bad.”  The series stars Mad Men’s Christina Christina Hendricks, Retta, Mae Whitman, Matthew Lillard, Reno Wilson, Manny Montana, Lidya Jewett and Izzy Stannard

  • Celebrate the new Good Girls TV show at a FREE a special bar night, with creative drink specials and prizes at VNYL, 100 Third Ave., on Galentine’s Day, Tues., Feb. 13th.  Registration is required to ensure space. 21+ only.
