Poutine is to Canada as hot dogs, burgers and pizza are to the USA, and with just as many variations. NYC Poutine Week celebrates the dish that starts with French fries, gravy and cheese curds, at both Brooklyn locations of Mile End Deli. The founders are from Montreal and know a thing or five about poutine.
Poutine (poo-teen) is a snack or a full meal, depending on its toppings, but it is always carbo-loaded, and therefore a perfect stick-to-your-ribs dish for winter.
My first poutine was many years ago, on a freezing cold day of skiing at Mt. Tremblant, 90-ish minutes north of Montreal, and it was love at first bite. It was just the fuel I needed to keep me warm for the rest of the day.
I’ve even smuggled back from Canada on trips since then the special unpasteurized cheese curds that give poutine its special squeaky bite (please don’t tell US Customs – they might revoke my Global Entry pass). But I digress.
Mile End Deli is offering gourmet versions of the Canadian staple for Poutine Week, which is through Sunday, July 23rd, along with its regular menu of overstuffed bagels, smoked meat sandwiches, brisket and other traditional Jewish deli foods. .
