Even if you saw the film versions created from the original Broadway plays, nothing compares to seeing live theater, as only New York City can offer.
A Raisin in the Sun – The first Broadway play written by an African-American woman, described by The New York Times credits with changing American theater forever. First produced in 1959 and adapted two years later into a now-classic film starring Sidney Poitier, it is as powerful today as it was 50 years ago. This limited run tells the heart-wrenching story of the Youngers, an African-American family attempting to move from a crowded two-bedroom apartment into a “white” neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago. But a new house is just one of the Youngers’ many dreams. Three generations each yearn for different versions of a better life — whether it’s a business, or a spouse, or the right to live with long-denied dignity.
The Wizard of Oz – Follow the Yellow Brick Road to enjoy the famous story of Dorothy and her trio of friends the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, the Lion, Dorothy and her little dog Toto, too. Everyone loves the classic story of the girl who wakes up in a strange land filled with witches and wizards, munchkins and monkeys — and befriends a cowardly lion, a tin man without a heart and a scarecrow with no brain in her quest to find her way back home. Journey through the land of Oz to meet the Wizard while humming along to memorable songs from the Oscar-winning film, including “Over the Rainbow,” “We’re Off to See the Wizard” and “If I Only Had a Brain.” The whole family will enjoy this zippy, one-hour version now playing at the Harlem Repertory Theatre in New York.
Ain’t Misbehavin’ – Get transported back in time to the golden age of jazz, when hotspots like the Cotton Club played host to the music of 1930s Harlem, and where swing music, jazz and stride piano infused the entire country with renewed energy. This Tony Award-winning, song-filled show celebrates the timeless music of Thomas “Fats” Waller, who wrote more than 400 songs during his career, many of which have become jazz standards still popular today, including the song that is the title of the show. An energetic ensemble of talented performers showcase the pleasurable and playful moods of the era and Waller’s style in a musical parade of his most popular hits.
