NYBG Orchid Show Opens Feb. 20, Followed by Kusama Show in April

POSTED BY

orchid show at New York Botanical Garden

The annual orchid show at the New York Botanical Garden is a NYC favorite, and a sure sign of spring.

Spotlight on Orchids features unusual orchids and other plants from NYBG’s permanent collections to be displayed in select galleries of the landmark glass greenhouse Haupt Conservatory, from February 20 to April 4, 2021.

The traditional Orchid Show throughout the garden has been reduced in size, reflecting  NYBG’s reduced indoor capacity, with social distancing.

Also, it gives the staff some breathing room to prepare for the next show, expected to be a blockbuster, with displays through out the grounds and in the garden’s library/museum.

Kusama show at NYBG

That would be  KUSAMA: Cosmic Nature is the first-ever comprehensive exploration of the artist’s lifelong fascination with the natural world takes place across the Garden’s 250-acre landscape, including material that has never been displayed publicly before.

The eagerly awaited exhibit by renowned Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama opens at the New York Botanical Garden on April 10, a week after the orchid show closes, and includes one of her legendary Infinity Rooms.  Tickets go on sale on Mar. 16.

Full information about the Kusama show here.

But I digress.

Spotlight on Orchids features intimate displays of orchids in brilliant white and striking colors set against the foliage of aroids, ferns, and bromeliads, planted as they might be found in nature and blending gracefully with their surroundings.

There also are artful floral creations by Garden horticulturists that combine expressive orchids with rocks, tree trunks, vines, and other found materials.

About Orchids

Orchids are one of the largest and most highly evolved flowering plant families.

An estimated 30,000 wild species grow worldwide in habitats ranging from rain forest to desert. Orchid breeders have augmented this remarkable natural diversity by hybridizing and naming more than 100,000 horticultural varieties.

Check the NYBG orchid page for tips on caring for orchids at home and other orchid facts.

Did you know that vanilla comes from an orchid?  NYBG knows.

Tickets

Spotlight on Orchids is Saturday, February 20, through Sunday, April 4, 2021, daily, 10 a.m.–5 p.m.

The exhibit is open to all visitors with the purchase of an advance, timed Garden Pass + Conservatory ticket, which includes access to the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory and outdoor gardens and collections.

Visit nybg.org/visit for more information or to purchase tickets.

NOTE that there are discount tickets for NYC residents and students.

NYBG is planning for  the return of The Orchid Show in 2022.
