Any overdue books, CDs and DVDs around the house? Reminder that kids and teens age 17 and under are getting amnesty from late fines at NYC’s three FREE public library systems, the New York Public Library, Brooklyn Public Library and Queens Library.
Get a New Start at NYC Libraries is a special one-time amnesty that clears overdue fines charged on loans before Oct. 19, 2017.
You still have to return what you borrowed – but you won’t have to pay a late fee for the late return.
Note that the overdue fines started up again after Oct. 19, so the sooner your kids and grandkids return their overdue materials, the lowerthe new fines will be.
Libraries help kids and teens succeed in school. That’s why NYC libraries have instituted this one-time fine amnesty on all kids’ and teens’ library cards.
This amnesty is a big deal for the more than 140,000 NYC school kids who cannot borrow books, CDs or DVDs from the New York Public Library because they owe more than $15 of overdue fines.
That’s one-third of the total number of school kids with library cards in Manhattan, Bronx and Staten Island served by the NYPL, which gave kids and teens a similar one-time amnesty in 2011. This year the NYPL is being joined by the Queens and Brooklyn systems.
Fines for ages 17 and under will be automatically cleared when overdue items are returned to the library.
