The restaurant and bar Nelson Blue has re-opened at South Street Seaport 15 months after being wrecked by Superstorm Sandy. It has taken that long to repair, restore and replace everything from the flood-damaged electrical wiring to the hand-carved woodwork and wine glasses. And rebuilding the kitchen, of course.
Nelson Blue’s full name is Nelson Blue New Zealand Bar & Grill, and it specializes in serving New Zealand lamb, as grilled chops, burgers or skewers, plus an extensive list of New Zealand wines. Also on the menu are Kiwi-style meat pies, fish, and sandwiches. Nothing on the menu is over $17, and there’s a daily happy hour. Click here for the full menu.
Nelson Blue is a friendly spot, like New Zealand itself. Manaakitanga – it’s the New Zealand word for hospitality. Yes, I’ve visited New Zealand, and would go back in that proverbial New York Minute.
Kia Ora is how New Zealanders say hello and welcome, so we say Kia Ora to Nelson Blue.
The re-opening of Nelson Blue is another sign that the heavily-damaged South Street Seaport area is coming back. Too slowly for most of us. NYCOTC hopes you support the new and newly re-opened businesses at the South St. Seaport.
