July was designated National Hot Dog Month in 1957, to celebrate the All-American wiener and bun, and the third Wednesday in July as National Hot Dog Day. That coincides with the annual hot dog lunch on Capitol Hill, sponsored by the North American Meat Institute.
July is also National Ice Cream Month, and we just celebrated National Ice Cream Day on Sunday, July 18, with freebies and deals. Many ice cream deals continue all all month, too.
The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council estimates that Americans eat more than 20 billion hot dogs each year, almost 40 percent during the peak hot dog season, between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
