Midsummer Night Swing begins this week, with three weeks of dancing to live bands outdoors under the stars in Lincoln Center.
This is the 30th anniversary of Midsummer Night Swing, with another great rotating roster of local and international Swing, Salsa, Disco, Pop and R&B bands.
Week One includes Formell y Los Van Van, the legendary Cuban band celebrating its 50th anniversary, a late night Silent Disco, and Lincoln Center’s WorldPride NYC celebration DiscoVogue with Escort, MikeQ and underground ballroom collective Qween Beat, and voguing lessons by Darrel Martin of Paris is Burning, and a night of salsa with Los Hacheros.
Advance tickets are $18 with tickets at the door priced at $22, and there are discounts for multi-ticket purchases, which you can share with friends.
The dance floor opens at 6pm with a FREE one-hour lesson beginning at 6:30, followed by live music from 7:30 to 10pm.
This is a friendly social dance scene, and you don’t need to bring your own dance partner. Just ask somebody to dance. That’s what I do – unless somebody asks me first.
Here are the details:

Since his passing in 2014, Juan’s son Samuel has stepped up to lead the renamed Formell y Los Van Van, continuing the group’s five-decade tradition of innovative charanga, salsa, son, and songo.

Dr. K’s Motown Revue captures every backbeat, tambourine shake, and poetic vocal of the Detroit sound that has shaped popular American music for the past six decades.

Los Hacheros – Salsa
Recently signed to Daptone’s Latin revival label, Chulo Records, New York City’s very own Los Hacheros keep the “deep groove of Afro-Caribbean music” (NPR) at the heart of their authentic salsa sound.
The seven-piece band brings a swinging aesthetic to son montuno, guaracha, and salsa, recalling the greats of the golden era of Latin music, all the while playing to a “full, hot and sweaty dance floor” (NPR).
- Dance Instructor: Jimmy Anton teaches Salsa
See you on the dance floor!
