Team USA will be wearing uniforms made right here in New York City. For the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, most of what Team USA wears is being Made in the USA, including here in the Fashion Capital of the World. Yea!
It’s a turn-around for the Ralph Lauren Corp., the USA Team clothing licensee, which got slammed for out-sourcing much of the uniforms for the 2008 USA Olympics team, much of that to China. Lauren got the lucrative manufacturing license after similar outrage about USA Team informs being out-sourced to Canadian clothier Roots.
According to Crain’s New York Business, Lauren is using 40 American vendors, including ranchers in the rural West and yarn spinners in Pennsylvania, being sewn in the NYC Garment District, where my own mother once worked sewing women’s hats for top millinery designer Lily Dache. The uniforms Made in NYC are for the closing ceremony and include a navy peacoat with a red stripe, a classic ski sweater with a reindeer motif and a hand-sewn American flag, and a tasseled chunky-knit hat.
