The 45th annual Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks display returns in all its brilliant glory over the East River in 2021, heralding yet another return to post-Pandemic normalcy in the greatest city on the planet.
Once again, more than 65,000 shells will be launched from five barges spaced along the East River, visible from all five boroughs.
That’s a change from 2020, when lockdown regulations prompted small, unannounced displays in each borough ahead of July 4th, which were edited into a virtual show on the 4th of July.
NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the milestone on Thursday, June 10, noting that “this is part of the summer of New York City, the rebirth of New York City.”
Details are still being worked out – but this much is known so far –
There will be separate viewing areas – one for those with proof of Covid vaccination, another for everybody else.
Those who have been vaccinated will have better views.
A Macy’s news release said that the 25-minute-long display will start at around 9:25 p.m. and set to music, including such traditional patriotic songs as “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “America the Beautiful”.
A special addition in 2021 is Tori Kelly’s rendition of “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” from the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical “Carousel”.
The opening lines of that beautiful song are “When you walk through a storm, keep your head up high”, which speaks directly to every one of us who has struggled and suffered through the unspeakable sadness of the last 15 months.
That song has brought tears to my eyes each and every time I have heard it for some 50 years, because it helped get me through my high school graduation without my father being there.
Here’s a video clip of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” from the 1956 film version of the movie version of the Broadway play, starring Gordon McRae and Shirley Jones, so you can find your own meaning to this powerful song before July 4th.
I double dare you to watch without crying. (Note- the song starts four minutes into the 8 minute clip)
