The first day of spring, tomorrow, Monday, Mar. 20, is Macaron Day, when top French pastry shops around the world give away FREE samples of these delicious almond-flavored treats.
For the last decade, French pastry shops in NYC have participated, donating a portion of the day’s sales to City Harvest, which helps feed NYC’s poor and homeless, when macaron fans purchase additional treats, Or, just pay for that one single free as a donation.
Other food freebies on the first day of spring:
It’s hard to describe a macaron — it’s a bite-sized sandwich of two halves of a merengue egg-white shell filled with creamy ganache, in just about any color and flavor a skilled pastry chef can dream up. So it’s hard to have just one.
UPDATE For some ridiculous reason, Macaron Day NYC 2017 was moved from the traditional Mar. 20 date to last week, and just about nobody knew about it. Which is a bummer for City Harvest.
Macaron Day NYC 2017 participating patisseries in Manhattan and Brooklyn included these shops. Perhaps you can still stop by and donate to City Harvest.

Macaron Day NYC has been organized by NYC French pastry chef Francois Payard, who cancelled both his participation and his organization skills this year.
Macaron Day on Mar. 20, and sometimes also on Mar. 19, it coincides with a similar Macaron Day celebration day in France. The program now has grown to include Macaron Day in US cities including Cincinnati and Seattle, and to Japan, Belgium and other countries.
But nobody celebrates Macaron Day on Mar. 18, except NYC. Here’s hoping it returns to its rightful date in 2018.
