Two of our favorite foods have been combined – mac and cheese and ice cream.
Kraft and Van Leeuwen have joined up to create macaroni and cheese ice cream, and you can get a FREE scoop today in Union Square.
Or, buy the new flavor at Van Leeuwen shops in NYC, including at the South Street Seaport, in New Jersey at the American Dream mall in East Rutherford, and in Los Angeles and Houston for the rest of July or while scoops last.
And, you can buy it online for nationwide shipping while scoops last, at $12 a pint.
The limited edition macaroni and cheese ice cream is what happens when National Mac and Cheese Day today, July 14, is smack in the middle of National Ice Cream Month in July and a few days before National Ice Cream Day on Sunday, July, 18th.
Also for National Ice Cream Month, Carvel is offering Churro Ice Cream – another limited edition. But I digress.
The Brooklyn-based ice cream company describes the Mac and Cheese flavor as “the ice cream you never knew you needed” because –
Have you ever met someone who didn’t smile while eating ice cream?
Or while eating a bowl of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese?
So it makes sense to combine the two and enjoy both, at the same time, in the same bowl, with the same mouth.
The soft orange hue that makes the iconic elbow-shaped pasta pop is made with paprika, annatto and turmeric, according to Kraft, which removed artificial flavors, preservatives and dyes from the recipe in 2016. Kraft said just like the pasta, the ice cream remains free of any artificial ingredients.
The press release does not say whose idea it was – Van Leeuwen, known for inventive flavors, or Kraft, known for traditional recipes. Whatever. It’s great marketing and maybe even great taste.
We don’t know, because the flavor is being released today, July 14, and you can’t taste a press release or a photo.
Where to get a FREE scoop
Free scoops of the Kraft Macaroni & Cheese ice cream will be handed out at Van Leeuwen truck stop at 17th and Broadway from 11am to 6pm, while supplies last.

More about Mac and Cheese Ice Cream
Van Leeuwen created the creamy treat using powdered cheese from Kraft Macaroni & Cheese boxes, according to People magazine.
“We know that there is nothing more refreshing on a hot summer day than ice cream. That is why we wanted to combine two of the most iconic comfort foods to create an ice cream with the unforgettable flavor of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese we all grew up with,” said Emily Violett, Sr. Associate Brand Manager for Kraft Macaroni & Cheese.
“As big fans of Van Leeuwen, we knew they’d be the perfect partner to create this ice cream with us. Not only does it taste delicious, but it’s also made with high quality ingredients and contains no artificial flavors, preservatives, or dyes just like our Kraft Macaroni & Cheese.”
Other offbeat Van Leewen flavors include Vegan Banana Pudding and Earl Grey Tea. Plus they make delicious normal flavors, too.
