Sadly, the going out of business sale starts today at Loehmann’s. For nearly a century, this native New York company has been selling designer clothing, shoes and accessories at steep discounts. All 39 stores in NYC and nationwide will close by the end of March, including the flagship store on Seventh Avenue in Chelsea. The Loehman’s website is advertising a limited time clearance sale of up to 70%, but online sales have been de-activated.
Loehmann’s declared bankruptcy just before the big holiday shopping season, and it was hopped the infusion of cash from holiday bargain hunters would help the company survive. But that didn’t happen.
So Loehmann’s is joining the list of great shopping destinations gone forever. In the last few years, fashion discounters Daffy’s, Sym’s and Filene’s Basement have shut their doors, too. Read the NYCOTC article on the death of other great names in New York City shopping, including Orbach’s, Gimbel’s, Best & Co., E. J. Korvette and Alexander’s. Remember those? I do.
