It will be easier and cheaper to visit Cuba starting this summer, when JetBlue begins weekly flights between JFK and Havana. The flight to Cuba will leave at noon Friday, and return at 8pm Friday, giving you one full week on the formerly-forbidden island.
The JFK-Havana route is a 3 hour and 20 minute flight, about the same as JFK-Miami.
The JetBlue flight, on a modern Airbus 320, will be a charter, by Cuba Travel Services, which also charters flights on Tuesdays, between Miami and Havana, operated by American Airlines and Sun Country to Havana. That’s how I flew recently – from Miami to Havana on an American Airlines plane.

Cost of the JetBlue JFK-Havana flight has not been announced yet, but hopefully will similar to other JetBlue Caribbean routes, but it will be less than the $850-ish it costs to fly via Miami, including an overnight layover.
So you could also go to Cuba for less than a week, splitting your travel between JetBlue and American or Sun Country.
Cuba Travel Services also arranges flights to other popular destinations in Cuba, including Havana, Cienfuegos, Camaguey, Santa Clara. Holguin and Santiago de Cuba.
There also will be new ferry service between Florida and Cuba, and cruise ships are planning to add Havana to their Caribbean itineraries.
