The Jazz Age Lawn Party returns to Governors Island the weekend of August 14/15 with two days of outdoor music and dancing – and it’s family-friendly.
The theme of this 15th Anniversary event is Return of the Twenties.
It would have been the 16th anniversary event in 2021, but 2020 was cancelled by you-know-what.
Jazz Age Lawn Party is the world’s original and largest Prohibition Era inspired gathering. It started in 2005 as a small gathering on Governors Island, and has grown into one of New York City’s most beloved, and longest running, events, attracting both New Yorkers and visitors to NYC.
Time travel back to the Twenties.
The ‘20s were fabulous frenzy, discovery and rebellion, including against the passing of Prohibition in 1920, which created bootleggers, speakeasies and gangsters with machine guns, and the birth of Jazz in Harlem, along with dances to go with it – Swing, Charleston and Lindy.
The 20s were also a golden age of art, thought and social progress, including the success of the Suffragette movement giving women the right to vote.
The discovery of the tombs of King Tuthankamen and Queen Nefertiti exploded Art Deco design and women’s fashion. Coco Chanel literally wore the pants, blurring gender lines.
All of this is celebrated at Jazz Age Lawn Party. If you want to dress up like a flapper or make believe you are one of the friends of The Great Gatsby, this is the place to do it – and you get to enjoy the sunset, too.
This is the original, and official Jazz Age Lawn Party, founded and hosted by Michael Arenella & His Dreamland Orchestra.
Tickets usually sell out, so get yours now.
And be sure to make reservations for the Governors Island Ferry – that’s the new reality of post-Pandemic New York City.
