Japanese Restaurant Week 2014 in New York City starts today for a month, not a week, through Monday, March 17th, with more than two dozen Japanese restaurants participating with special menus ranging from $12 to $15. This year’s theme celebrates the regional cuisines of Japan and the centennial of Tokyo Station, and many of the participating restaurants are offering dishes that allow diners to take a journey back in time to that era.
Many participating restaurants are serving special “ekiben” bento boxes that include local Japanese dishes. Ekiben is Japanese fast food, sold at railway train stations in Japan including Tokyo Station, with local and regional favorites that vary within Japan’s 21 prefectures. Participating NYC Japanese Restaurant Week restaurants also are serving full menus beyond ekiben bento boxes.

Japanese Restaurant Week winds up with Japan Week in NYC in March, including a three-day festival in Grand Central Terminal with food, crafts and free Japanese cultural performances and demonstrations, and information about travel to Japan.
