Celebrate all things Japanese in Central Park tomorrow, Mother’s Day. It’s the annual Japan Day festival of Japanese food, performances, and family-friendly activities. FREE, of course.
There’s Kabuki face painting, origami, and yo-yo fishing for the kids, plus get to know all about Japan’s Superconducting Maglev high-speed train, learn Japanese phrases, try on yukata. Kids of all ages can try their hand at calligraphy and have their picture taken with Hello Kitty.
Sample gyoza, miso soup, okonomiyaki, tonkotsu shoyu ramen and Japanese snacks at the food tents.
The entertainment includes taiko drumming, dance performances, a karate demonstration, and performances by top Japanese recording artists, and more.
The finale is a special project that Japan Day organizers have been planning for months: Fortune Cookie in Love is the New York version of the massive hit video by J-pop sensation AKB48. Portions of this video have been shot with New York-based Japanese business and organizations participating, and the final portion of the video will be recorded at 3:45PM.
Here’s a sneak peek.
BTW — New York City is home to the largest Japanese community in the USA.
Japan Day @ Central Park, 9:30AM to 4PM at the Naumberg Bandshell, Central Park, 69th Street and Fifth Avenue, rain or shine, so let’s hope for shine.
